Marcel began playing tennis at the age of 5. He considers clay as his favorite surface, although his greatest achievements came on hard court. Marcel is supported by his long time fitness trainer Sergi Valdaura who is a secret behind Marcel’s incredible endurance and speed.

He enjoys watching and playing soccer and is a big supporter of R.C.D. Espanyol. Marcel’s younger brother Gerard is also an accomplished tennis player who reached a career-high ranking of 217 in the world in 2013. Marcel is the son of Javier, a commercial director and Montse, a teacher, and he speaks Catalan, Spanish and English.
